Code of Honor...Do You Have One?

Let's see, member of the National Association of Realtors, Florida Association of Realtors and the Daytona Beach Association of Realtors.  OK, we have the Florida Real Estate Commission,  the Realtor Code of Ethics, our Board Rules and Company Policy, I think you get the message.  Lots of rules but what about MY CODE OF HONOR?

I will always educate and encourage homeownership and all the benefits that come with it.  It is my responsibility as a Realtor to preserve my profession as I truly believe what I do is a true and honorable service.

I know in my heart it is a privilege to work with a customer, therefore I will value them, all of them.

I  will walk away from a customer if they are working with another agent.  Why, it's the right thing to do!

I live by the golden rule! Cooperation. Violate a law or rule or try to entice me to do either. Plain and simple, I'll report you, that way I will do a service for my entire profession

Regardless of how rude or obnoxious a co-operating broker is, I will do my job and do it objectively.

I will tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth!  Every human being on the planet deserves it!

Every decision I make in a transaction will always be in the best interest of my customer.  I know if I treat my customer right, income will follow!

I believe our main focus should be on problem solving and finding a solution.  Why the heck do you think the public needs us?

I believe that it's our responsibility to educate the public.

We set the trends and spend all our time in the trenches.

Who better than us to report the FACTS!

I believe it is my responsibility to continually educate and train.  My objective is always to do the very best I can.

I believe that I must participate in various activities, volunteer activities, I have a voice and I am going to use it.

I believe in balance.

Personally and professionally my life must be fulfilling, otherwise I will not be able to give the quality service that every single customer deserves!

Do you walk the walk and talk the talk, going above and beyond the call of duty?  The real question is do you have high standards?  Your own personal policy, how about a Code of Honor?

Just said good night to my Bible Study ladies and came across your post.  We actually discussed integrity tonight.  Our study discussed that the only thing we have coming ang going from this world is our name.  Whether we strengthen it or tarnish it is what's in between.  Thanks for your code of honor idea.  I'm challenged to use yours as a template and write one for myself.  Great standard to live by.

Marlene-Thanks for stopping by.  It's funny other things in my mind was integrity and reputation.  I really believe that is all we have and that is our good names!  I really appreciate the comment.

Code of ethics...we obviously have that.  Do all Realtors abide by it?  Not necessarily.....its nice to hear that you are going above and beyond!
Posted by Kaushik Sirkar (Call Realty, Inc.) about 5 years ago
Midori - what a refreshing read! I actually printed that and tucked it inside my Rookie Journal because I think it's right and good to create those kind of guidelines for your OWN conduct. Thanks for sharing it.

You bet I have one. It's not because I have to answer to those you mentioned above but because I have to answer to me. You and I get along so well because we live by the same code. See you at the office!
Posted by Lysa Napolitano about 5 years ago
Well done!  I really like how you've lined that out!  I will have to be more deliberate, like yourself.  I need to hold myself accountable.

Kaushik-Code of Ethics, is it enough? Not sure!  I appreciate you stopping by!  Not sure  if it is going above and beyond the call of duty. Thank You....

Jennifer-Thank You! You have a rookie journal.  That is awesome Jennifer....I am imagine it is quite useful and handy.  Yes everyone should have a standard in how they live.  I appreciate you stopping by!

Lysa-Oh, how I know! Yes it is ourselves that we have to live with after we make a decision.  I hold myself accountable for every little thing I do.  If I don't like the outcome I look and see where I made the mistake.  I think if more people really held themselves accountable our world would be a much better place to live.

Cynthia-Thanks for stopping by. I really live by this code, it is embedded in my mind and honestly I don't know any other way to be.  I believe all of us must work on accountibility, I think it is human nature to go the opposite, why, it's easier.  I really appreciate the comment.

Midori,

I could have not said it better myself. Our profession is challenging and our personal code of ethics gets tested every day, 24 hours a day. I do believe in holding the standards high and putting our customers' priorities first.

Nice post Midori!  Your right about having a PERSONAL CODE OF HONOR, and setting high standards for oneself. Its too easy slip all the way down the slope even with one instance of bending/breaking the rules.

btw Neal stopped by my blog and said Hi.

Sally-Thank You for commenting.  I think everyone should go above and beyond the call of duty after all we are real estate professionals.  I do agree with you, life would be easier ff everyone played by the same rules. Remember those that don't, what goes around comes around. As a professional we have to think and act objectively. Without emotion.   I love your POSTS!

Al-Thank you.....Yes I agree with you, the cost is too high for me! Neal let me know that my blog about you got less comments than yours.  Congrats!  Neal writes some great posts!  He is a south florida boy.........

Alexander-I did place it in the group but not for the stars, I didn't realize there was a limit of how many groups you can post to.  It does make sense to post it there!  I am going to read the guidelines again as originally I wasn't sure if it should be posted there.  Thanks again my friend.

Hi Neal!

Larry-Thank You!  We all should walk the walk and talk the talk.  I appreciate you stopping by and reading!

Gary-Character is so important in our business, I agree that we can never talk enough about what we do right.  Yes, I agree with you on the bigger world as well.  Your mind must be open to see that pic.  Thanks for stopping by Gary and I appreciate your comments.

Sometimes it's hard for me to keep emotion out....I have been told by some that I went above and beyond....and am a family friend.  I suppose those are the rare ones.
Posted by Celeste "SALLY" Cheeseman, RA, CRS, HAWAII Real Estate & Relocations (Century 21 Liberty Homes) about 5 years ago
Sally-I know its hard to keep emotion out, we can feel as the customer does we just can't make decisions based on it, keep your focus on what you are trying to accomplish or the task at hand.  I have learned to walk away and come back to things, take a deep breath before I speak and always always put the other party in my shoes and me in theirs.  As long as I do not let my emotion determine what I am going to do next, I know that everything will be alright.  It's hard in this business because people sometimes disregard our profession.

Wow Midori- I'm impressed!  What an incredible read!  I've often too thought of putting something together for my clients, but my office actually has one that I thought was well written and simply attach that to my listings or buyer rep agreement.  I'm considering writing my own now! Great Job!

Melissa-Thank You! You could say it is my own personal mission, everyone should have one and live by one.  Most companies have one including the one I work for.  You should write your own if feel compelled to do so.  I believe it will empower you and help you to always do the right thing. It helps me........ thanks for stopping by, I always appreciate other's feedback.

Midori - I love your simple yet comprehensive statement.  It's what we think but rarely put down on paper.  Over my desk I have one of those "successories" plaques, one with "integrity" on it, given by a friend.  I should share that with others.

But ofcourse

Posted by Alex Greb ((Portland MLS)) almost 4 years ago

If only people could understand that most of us really care, actually get emotional when we make there dreams come true. I don't know how many of us there are left but I actually still get a tear in my eye when I hand a buyer there new keys. Following the code only makes our lives easier, it's to bad others don't feel that way.
